Print a single tag

Print one tag for a unit on a label printer, or on a chosen position of an A4 sheet of plain paper or label stock.

Sometimes you only need one tag: a unit you registered with No tag yet, a single job, or a replacement for a damaged tag. You can print one tag from the unit page without using a whole sheet.

Open the print window

  1. Click Units in the sidebar and open the unit.
  2. Click Print tag.

The print window has two tabs: Label printer and A4 sheet. Choose the one that matches what you're printing on.

If the unit doesn't have a tag, you'll see Add a tag instead of Print tag. Add a tag first, then print it. See Replace a damaged or lost tag, which also covers adding a tag.

Use this tab if you have a Brother, Dymo or similar label printer.

  1. Open the Label printer tab. It prints one 70 x 37 mm label.
  2. Click Print, or Download PDF if you want to print it from another device.
  3. In the print dialog, choose your label printer.
  4. Choose a label size in your printer settings that fits a 70 x 37 mm label.
  5. Set the scale to "Actual size" or 100%, then print.

Use weatherproof labels if your printer supports them, especially for outdoor units.

InstallPass A4 sheets have 24 tags, 3 across and 8 down. Use this tab for plain paper, or to print on a label that's still free on a partly used label sheet.

  1. Open the A4 sheet tab.
  2. Choose the sheet type. Plain paper prints inside a 10 mm margin with cut guides, so nothing is clipped. 24-up label sheet prints edge to edge to line up with 70 x 37 mm label stock.
  3. Pick the position to print on. The positions match the layout of a 24-up sheet.
  4. Put the sheet in the printer the right way up. If a partly used sheet goes in upside down, the tag prints on the wrong position.
  5. Click Print or Download PDF.
  6. In the print dialog, choose A4 as the paper size and set the scale to "Actual size" or 100%, then print.

Tip: Before you feed a partly used sheet through, check that the remaining labels are stuck down firmly. A label that lifts at the edge can come off inside the printer and cause a jam.

Check the tag before you stick it

  1. Look at the printed code under the QR and check it matches the code on the unit page.
  2. Scan the QR with your phone camera to check it reads.
  3. Stick the tag on a clean, dry, flat spot on the unit.

If it doesn't print properly

  • The tag is too big or too small. The scale isn't set to "Actual size" or 100%. Turn off "Fit to page" and try again.
  • The tag lands on the wrong A4 label. Check the position you picked and which way up the sheet went into the printer. Try a test on plain paper first.
  • The QR won't scan. Check that the print is sharp and not smudged. Reprint it if needed.

What installers say about it

The same story in every trade: a tag that stays on the unit is what brings the next job back to the person who fitted it, years after the invoice was paid.

Example
Three geysers I fitted in 2023 came back to me this winter instead of going to whoever was cheapest on Google. The tag was still on the pipe and they scanned it.
