Photograph the plate. We will tell you what it is.
Every geyser, inverter, heat pump and gate motor carries a rating plate. Photograph yours and see what InstallPass reads off it. Nothing to sign up for, nothing installed, and the photo is never stored.

Photograph the plate, or upload a photo of it
The silver or white label on the side of the unit, with the brand, model and serial printed on it. Photograph it now, upload one you already have, or paste one in. It reads the photo, shows you what it found, and asks for nothing in return.
The photo is never stored. It goes straight to the reader inside one request, is read once and is gone: not uploaded, not published, not attached to any record, and the details read off it are not kept either. Our privacy policy says the same in full.

Your installer adds the rest
Install date, warranty length, service interval, the address and the customer, then sticks the tag on. That is the minute. Everything above came off the photo on its own.
That is a read of the plate drawn at the top of this page. Yours will show only the fields your own photo shows: no guesses, no filler. It is the same reader installers use inside InstallPass, on the same plates, so what you get here is what they get on site.
For the clearest read
- Fill the frame with the label. Get close enough that the small print is sharp.
- Turn the flash off. Glare on a metal plate wipes out whole lines.
- Wipe the dust off, and straighten up so the plate is square to the camera.
Already a QR tag on the unit?
Then the plate is beside the point: the tag opens the whole record, including who fitted it and when it was last serviced.
Who this is for
Both sides of the same geyser
The reader is free and needs no account, so it is as much for the person who owns the unit as for the person who fitted it.
It is in your home
Find out what is actually installed: the make, the model and the serial, without writing anything down wrong. If it already carries an InstallPass tag, scan that instead and you get the install date, the warranty, the service history and a way to book the installer who fitted it.
You fit them for a living
This is the first minute of registering a unit, and the same reader runs inside the app. Do it on every install, stick a tag on, and the service that comes due in two years comes back to you rather than to whoever the customer finds online.
What it can read
The plates on the things that get installed
Anything with a printed data label, which is most of what is bolted to a South African house.
Geysers
Element rating, capacity and the manufacture date stamped on the plate.
Inverters and batteries
Brand, model and kW or kWh rating off the side of the unit.
Heat pumps
Model, refrigerant and the rated output.
Gate and garage motors
The motor model and serial under the cover.
Aircon units
Indoor and outdoor model numbers and the BTU rating.
Pool pumps
Pump model, kW and the plate serial.

After the read
A plate tells you what it is. A tag tells you what happened to it.
The reader is the first minute of registering a unit. These four are what make that minute worth spending, and they are what an installer gets out of it for years afterwards.
Read the plate
The photo fills in the record
What you just watched happen is the first minute of registering a unit. Inside the app the same reader fills the same fields, and the installer confirms them rather than typing them.

Tag the unit
A QR tag goes on beside the plate
A weatherproof sticker with the code printed under the QR, put where the next person to look at the unit will see it. Printed packs, or your own sheets, 24 to an A4 page.
- Stuck on before you pack up
- Survives a roof space or an outside wall
- Every code belongs to one company
24 tags to an A4 sheet
They scan it
The owner scans it, with no app
A phone camera opens the passport: what the unit is, who fitted it, what is still under warranty and every service since, on a page that belongs to the installer who fitted it.
- Works on any phone browser
- No account for the homeowner
- Their name and number are never on it

The next service comes back to them
When a service falls due the reminder goes out in the installer's name, and the booking lands on their phone with the unit and its history attached, rather than with whoever advertises hardest.

Guides for installers who want repeat work
What one repeat call-out is worth: the numbers behind service work
A new install is a one-off. The services that follow it are not. Here is how to work out what a customer who keeps calling you is actually worth.
Security and CCTV installers: turning alarm and camera installs into service work
Alarm batteries go flat, recorder drives fill up and cameras drift out of focus. Here is how to make sure the call comes to you when they do.
A home equipment register: what to keep for your geyser, inverter and gate motor
Every house has a handful of units that need servicing, carry a warranty and come up when you sell. Here is what to keep for each, and where to keep it.
In their words
What installers say about it
The same story in every trade: a tag that stays on the unit is what brings the next job back to the person who fitted it, years after the invoice was paid.
Three geysers I fitted in 2023 came back to me this winter instead of going to whoever was cheapest on Google. The tag was still on the pipe and they scanned it.
The rating plate photo doing the typing is the part my guys actually use. Before this, half the job cards came back with the serial number missing.
A customer phoned about a warranty claim from two years ago. I had the certificate of compliance and the install date on screen before she finished the sentence.

Read one plate. Then do it on every install.
InstallPass turns that minute into a service passport your customer can scan for years, with the booking coming back to you. Fourteen days free, no card needed.
