How tags work
What a tag code is, what happens when someone scans it, what each tag status means and the ways to get tags for your company.
A tag is the QR label you stick on a unit. It's the link between the physical geyser, inverter or gate motor and its passport in InstallPass.
The tag code
Every tag has a unique code, such as IP-7K4Q-92, printed under the QR. No two tags share a code.
The QR opens installpass.com/t/ followed by the code, for example installpass.com/t/IP-7K4Q-92. Anyone can scan it with a normal phone camera. If the QR is dirty or damaged, they can go to installpass.com/t and type the code instead.
Tags belong to your company
Every tag belongs to one company. The tags created for your company can only be used by your team. Another installer can't register a unit on one of your tags, and you can't use theirs. If you try, InstallPass tells you the tag belongs to another installer.
Tag statuses
Each tag has one of three statuses:
- Available. The tag isn't linked to a unit yet. You can use it when you register a unit.
- In use. The tag has been claimed, which means it's linked to a unit. Scanning it opens that unit's passport.
- Void. The tag is no longer active, for example because it was replaced. Anyone who scans it sees that the tag is no longer active.
A tag can only be linked to one unit. If a tag gets damaged or lost, replace it rather than trying to reuse it. See Replace a damaged or lost tag.
Ways to get tags
There are three ways to get tags:
- Self-print sheets. On Tags, click Print self-print sheet to create 24 new codes and print them on A4 label stock. This is the quickest way to start. See Print tag sheets.
- Weatherproof label stock. Print the same sheets onto blank vinyl label sheets from a stationer for anything that lives outdoors. Nothing to order from us and nothing to wait for.
- A tag for a single unit. When you register a unit and choose No tag yet, or add a tag to a unit later, InstallPass can create a new code for just that unit. You then print it on a label printer or on one position of an A4 sheet. See Print a single tag.
Self-print sheets suit most installers when they start out. Printed packs save you the printing and are ready to use straight out of the box.
Scanning your own tags
When you're signed in to InstallPass on your phone, scanning works a little differently for your team:
- If you scan one of your company's tags that isn't registered yet with your normal phone camera, the page shows Register this tag. Tap it to register a unit on that tag.
- Inside the app, the Scan a tag button takes you to the right place. An available tag takes you to Register a unit with the code filled in, and a tag that's already on one of your units opens that unit.
See Scan a tag for the details.
Where to stick a tag
- Clean and dry the surface first so the label sticks properly.
- Pick a flat spot that's easy to see and easy to reach with a phone.
- Avoid surfaces that get very hot, and spots where the tag will be covered by a panel or lagging.
Tip: Stick the tag and register the unit before you leave site. A tag in your bakkie is easy to put on the wrong unit later.
