Scan a tag
Use the Scan a tag button to read a QR with your camera and go straight to registering a unit or opening one you've already tagged.
Scanning is the fastest way to get to the right place in InstallPass when you're standing in front of a unit.
Where to find it
- On a computer: the Scan a tag button is in the sidebar.
- On a phone: tap the round Scan a tag button at the bottom right of the screen.
Scan a tag
- Tap Scan a tag. InstallPass opens your camera.
- If your browser asks for permission to use the camera, allow it.
- Point the camera at the QR on the tag and hold steady until it's read.
What happens next
What you see depends on the tag you scanned.
One of your available tags
You go straight to Register a unit with the code already filled in. Carry on with the plate photo and the unit details. See Register a unit.
A tag that's already on one of your units
InstallPass opens that unit. From there you can check its details, log a service, view the passport or print a tag. See Manage your units.
Another company's tag
You'll see a message that the tag belongs to another company. You can't register a unit on it or open its unit in your app.
An unknown code
You'll see a message that the code wasn't recognised. Check that it's an InstallPass tag, then try typing the code to rule out a bad scan.
If the camera can't be used
Sometimes the camera won't work: permission was blocked, the QR is damaged, or the light is poor. Type the code instead. It's printed under the QR, for example IP-7K4Q-92, and the hyphens are optional. You can also type the code in the first step of Register a unit.
If you blocked camera access by mistake, allow it again in your browser's settings for the InstallPass site, then try again.
Scanning with your normal phone camera
You don't have to open the app first. If you're signed in to InstallPass on your phone and you scan one of your company's unregistered tags with your normal camera app, the page shows Register this tag. Tap it to register a unit on that tag.
This is useful when you've grabbed a tag from a pack and want to register the unit as quickly as possible.
Tips for a good scan
- Clean the tag with a cloth if it's dusty or greasy.
- Hold the phone straight on to the tag rather than at an angle.
- In a dark roof space or garage, turn on your phone's torch and tilt the phone slightly so the light doesn't glare off the label.
- If the QR is badly damaged, type the code and then replace the tag. See Replace a damaged or lost tag.
Tip: Scan every tag right after you stick it on. If it opens the right unit in the app, you know the homeowner's scan will work too.
